geography

Noflen is at 630  m above sea level. M. , eight kilometers northwest of the city of Thun (as the crow flies). The scattered settlement without an actual village center extends in a promising location on the southern foothills of the Belpberg between the valley plains of the Gürbe in the west and the Aare in the east.

The area of the 2.7 km² large municipal area comprised a section of the broad Aare valley between Bern and Thun. The central part of the area is formed by the approximately 1 km wide ridge of Noflen, which is the southern continuation of the Belpberg, with the elevations of Häsenen ( 660  m above sea level ) and Berg (up to 680  m above sea level , highest point of the Local community). To the east, the municipal ban extends over a relatively gently sloping slope into the formerly marshy valley basin of the Limpach (tributary of the Aare). In the west, the ridge drops with a steep slope to the Gürbetal level and extends over the canalized Müsche to the middle of the here about 1.5 km wide level. In 1997, 5% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 14% for forests and woodlands and 81% for agriculture.

The municipality of Noflen consisted of the hamlets Oberdörfli ( 630  m above sea level ) and Unterdörfli ( 612  m above sea level ) on the ridge, Stoffelsrüti ( 580  m above sea level ) slightly elevated on the western edge of the Limpachsenke and some farm groups and individual farms. Neighboring communities of Noflen were Kirchdorf (BE) , Uttigen , Uetendorf , Seftigen and Burgistein .

Even today, arable and vegetable growing (especially cabbage planting) in the Gürbetal, as well as dairy farming and cattle breeding, have an important place in the income structure of the population. Some other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community thanks to its attractive location. The first written mention of the place took place in 1250 under the name Novelon . Later the names Noflon (1260), Nofflen (1312) and Nofflon (1356) appeared. The place name goes back to the Latin word novale ( fallow field ).

The area of Noflen used to belong to the domain of the barons of Kramburg. Under the rule of Bern (since the Reformation in 1528) it was subordinate to the Seftigen district court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Noflen belonged to the Seftigen district during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Seftigen District Office, which received the status of an administrative district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. To a territorial expansion occurred in 1948 when the previously to the municipality Jaberg belonging exclave of the municipality was annexed Noflen Stoffelsrüti.
