Kiesen ( Bern German Chise [ ˈχɪsə ]) is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

geography

Kiesen lies at 547  m above sea level. M. , 8 km north-northwest of the city of Thun (linear distance). The village extends on both sides of the Chise (gravel) on the flood plain on the eastern edge of the wide Aare valley .

The 4.7 km² municipal area covers a section of the Aareniederung between Bern and Thun. The western and southwestern border runs along the Aare, which is accompanied by a forest belt here. On the parish ground, the Chise and Rotache flow into the Aare just 1 km apart. From the Aare, the municipal ban extends eastward over the wide plain of the Aare valley to the adjacent hills. On the Deiberg is 593  m above sea level. M. reached the highest elevation of gravel. In the extreme southeast, the area extends over the extensive Chisenwald ( 586  m above sea level ) to the edge of the Ägelmoos depression . In 1997, 17% of the municipal area was in settlements, 28% in forests and woodlands, 52% in agriculture and a little less than 3% was unproductive land.

The Aarhus settlement ( 540  m above sea level ) on the Aare bridge as well as various groups of farms and individual farms belong to Kiesen . Neighboring communities of Kiesen are Wichtrach , Oppligen , Heimberg , Uttigen and Jaberg .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1236 under the name Chisun . Later the names Chison (1250), Kison (1253), Kyson (1305) and Kisen (1313) appeared. The place name originally goes back to a water body name. Chise has the meaning of the gravel , the gravel leading .

Since the Middle Ages , Kiesen has formed its own rule, over which the Interlaken Monastery in the 13th century , and various Bernese burger families from the early 14th century had bailiwick rights . The high level of jurisdiction lay with the Konolfingen Regional Court. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Kiesen belonged to the Steffisburg district during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Konolfingen Oberamt , which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831 .

Early on, Kiesen formed a traffic junction at the crossroads from Bern to Thun and from the Emmental over the Aare to the Schwarzenburgerland . After the Aare in the Kiesen area had been corrected and straightened in 1826, the old Aare ferry was replaced by a bridge in 1839.

population

With 1001 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), Kiesen is one of the smaller communities in the canton of Bern. 95.4% of the residents speak German, 1.2% speak Albanian and 0.9% speak Serbo-Croatian (as of 2000). The population of Kiesen was 437 inhabitants in 1850 and 433 inhabitants in 1900. During the 20th century the population increased continuously. In 1980 there were 627 inhabitants.

coat of arms

The municipality of Kiesen has a coat of arms that it adopted in 1943.

Description of coat of arms
"In gold on a green three-mountain, a black sign (left-facing 5) between two red flames."
meaning

The coat of arms goes back to the seal of Heinrich von Kiesen from 1380. One interpretation sees the black symbol of a left-facing "5" representing a so-called gravel hook ("Chisehagge"). In earlier times, every family had a gravel hook to remove the wooden blocks when the water rushes from the Kiesenbach, Rotache or Aare.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Kiesen was a village dominated by agriculture . Even today, arable farming , fruit growing , dairy farming and cattle breeding play an important role in the income structure of the population. Numerous other jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. A gravel works, a toy factory, a furniture factory as well as construction, IT, food processing and wine trading companies are all represented in Kiesen. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many employed people are therefore commuters who work mainly in the larger towns in the Aare Valley, in the Thun area and in the Bern agglomeration.

traffic

The community is very well developed in terms of transport. It is located on the old main road from Bern to Thun . The next connection to the A6 motorway (Bern-Thun), which was opened in 1971 and crosses the municipality, is around 2 km from the town center. The railway line from Bern to Thun was put into operation on July 1, 1859 with a train station in Kiesen. On September 23, 1941 there was a serious railway accident .

Attractions

On the hill to the east of the village is the so-called Kiesen Castle , a country estate that was built in 1669 on the site of a medieval castle. The building was redesigned and expanded in 1794. In 1815, under Rudolf Emanuel Effinger, the cooperative village cheese dairy was opened on the castle estate, which has housed the National Dairy Museum since 1974. Kiesen does not have its own church, it belongs to the Wichtrach parish.
