The discovery of burial mounds from the Hallstatt period in the war wood indicates an early settlement of the community area. The place was first mentioned in a document as early as 855 or 861 under the name Perolteswilare . The names Bereswilen (1229), Berolswile (1310), Beriswil (1389) and Bäriswyl (1479) appeared later . The place name is derived from the Old High German personal name Perolt and thus means Perolt's court .

Since the Middle Ages , Bäriswil has formed its own small rulership, which was owned by various Bernese families. At the beginning of the 15th century, the village came under the sovereignty of the city of Bern and was assigned to the Zollikofen district court . In 1720 Bäriswil was incorporated into the Hindelbank rule under the von Erlach family. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Bäriswil belonged to the Burgdorf district during the Helvetic period and from 1803 to the Burgdorf Oberamt, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831.

The pottery industry developed in Bäriswil from 1758. The Bäriswil pottery experienced its stylistic and artistic peak between around 1780 and 1820. Production was in the hands of three families with the names Kräuchi, Kläyi and Witschi until the 1870s. At that time the village was widely known for its ceramics. The last above-ground evidence of this handicraft production, which is important for the village, is the so-called tube hut. There was also grinding wheel production, sculptors and glaziers.
