Until December 31, 2017, Gelterfingen was a political municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district of the canton of Bern in Switzerland . On January 1, 2018 , Gelterfingen merged with the former municipalities of Mühledorf and Noflen to form the new municipality of Kirchdorf .

geography

Gelterfingen lies at 552  m above sea level. M. , 13 km south-southeast of the canton capital Bern (linear distance). The farming village extends on the eastern edge of the Gürbetal level , slightly elevated on the alluvial cone of the village stream at the southwest foot of the Belpberg . Thanks to its location on the sunny slope of the mountain, Gelterfingen has a very mild climate compared to the surrounding area.

The area of the 3.5 km² large municipal area comprised a section of the Gürbe valley. The western border mostly ran along the canalized and straightened Gürbe . From here the communal soil extended eastward over the agriculturally intensively used valley plain (around 1 km wide) with the Müsche canal and over the slope of Gelterfingen to the edge of the plateau of the Belpberg. The south-west slope of the Belpberg is very steep in most places and partly crossed by sandstone cliffs . While the steep slopes are forest-covered ( Kramburgwald , Berghölzli ), the lower slope section is covered with meadows. At 823  m above sea level M. , the highest elevation of Gelterfingen was reached south of Eggenhorn. The northern boundary formed the valley of Heiteren. In 1997, 5% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 23% for forests and trees and 72% for agriculture.

Gelterfingen included the southernmost part of Heiteren ( 538  m above sea level ) at the west foot of the Belpberg, the hamlet of Kramburg ( 660  m above sea level ) on the south-western slope of the Belpberg, the Eggenhorn estate ( 781  m above sea level ) on the Height of the mountain and various individual farms. Neighboring communities of Gelterfingen were Belp , Gerzensee , Mühledorf , Kirchenthurnen , Rümligen , Kaufdorf and Toffen .

population

With 303 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2017) Gelterfingen was one of the small communities in the canton of Bern. 98.0% of the residents speak German, 0.4% speak Italian and 0.4% speak Portuguese (as of 2000). The population of Gelterfingen was 299 inhabitants in 1850 and 243 in 1900. In the course of the 20th century, the population fluctuated between 240 and 310 people, but showed greater fluctuations. Since 1990 (303 inhabitants) a significant decrease in population has been recorded.

politics

The voting shares of the parties in the 2015 National Council elections were: SVP 55.4%, BDP 17.0%, SP 14.7%, glp 2.8%, GPS 2.4%, EDU 2.2%, FDP 1.2 %, ALP 1.1%.

economy

Until the second half of the 20th century, Gelterfingen was a predominantly agricultural village. Even today, arable farming and vegetable growing on the fertile soils of the Gürbe valley, as well as dairy farming and cattle breeding in the elevated areas, have an important role in the income structure of the population. The earlier widespread cultivation of cabbage is in decline. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector, including in wood processing companies and the automotive industry. Many employees are also commuters who work mainly in the larger towns in the area, in the Bern agglomeration and in the Thun area .

traffic

The community was located off the main thoroughfares on a connecting road from Belp to Kirchdorf (BE) . The closest connection to the A6 motorway (Bern-Thun) is around 8 km from the village. Gelterfingen is connected to the public transport network through a Postbus course , which serves the route from Belp to Kirchdorf.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1345 under the name Geltolfingen ; The name Gelterfingen has been handed down from 1364 . The place name goes back to the Old High German personal name Gildulf or Geltolf and therefore means for the people of Gildulf / Geltolf .

Gelterfingen developed below Kramburg Castle, which presumably already existed in the 12th century. The barons of Kramburg were a ministerial family of the Counts of Kyburg and owned the area of Gelterfingen, Gerzensee and Uttigen , which they made their ancestral seat in the 13th century. After the family of the Barons von Kramburg had died out around 1355, the property came to the Johanniterkommende Münchenbuchsee in 1373 . Under immediate Bernese rule (from 1528, after the secularization of the Kommende), Kramburg and Gelterfingen were raised to a Venner court, which was subordinate to the Seftigen district court.

After the collapse of the city and republic of Bern (1798), Gelterfingen belonged to the Seftigen district during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Seftigen district office, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. From 1855 the Gürbe was corrected, which earlier often flooded the entire valley floor. As a result, valuable cultivated land was gained over time. The last major improvement took place between 1942 and 1951.

Attractions

Various stately farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved in Gelterfingen. Some remains of the wall of the former Kramburg Castle are visible in the forest above the village. Gelterfingen does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Kirchdorf.
