Jaberg is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .

geography

Jaberg is at 540  m above sea level. M. , 8 km northwest of the city of Thun (linear distance). The village extends in the valley to the west of the Aare and on the slope of the southern foothills of the Belpberg , across from Kiesen .

The only 1.3 km² large but elongated municipal area comprises a section of the Aare valley between Bern and Thun. The eastern border runs along the canalised and straightened Aare. From here the municipality extends westward over a narrow floodplain and the slope of Jaberg to the adjacent ridge, which forms the southern continuation of the Belpberg. On this hilltop in Gestelen and in the Stöckliwald with 600  m above sea level. M. reached the highest elevations of Jaberg. In 1997, 20% of the municipal area was accounted for by settlements, 22% for forests and woodlands and 52% for agriculture; slightly less than 6% was unproductive land.

Jaberg consists of the settlement core of Vorder Jaberg ( 540  m above sea level at the Aare crossing), which has been expanded to include a residential quarter, and the hamlet of Hinter Jaberg ( 560  m above sea level ) on the eastern slope of the Gestelen and some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Jaberg are Wichtrach , Kiesen , Uttigen and Kirchdorf (BE) .

population

With 278 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) Jaberg is one of the small communities in the canton of Bern. 97.5% of the residents speak German, 0.9% speak Italian and 0.9% speak Portuguese (as of 2000). The population of Jaberg was 271 in 1850, compared with 162 in 1900. During the 20th century, the population always fluctuated between 140 and 190 people. Since 1980 (159 inhabitants) there has been a significant increase in population.

economy

Jaberg was a predominantly agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century . Even today, arable farming as well as dairy farming and animal husbandry play an important role in the income structure of the population. Further jobs are available in local small businesses and in the service sector. Jaberg is the site of a landfill and a gravel works. The largest gravel pits in the Canton of Bern are located here. In the last few decades the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the larger towns in the area and in the Bern or Thun area.

traffic

The community is very well developed in terms of transport, although it is located away from the larger thoroughfares on a connecting road from Mühlethurnen to Kiesen . Vorder Jaberg has a local bypass, which was relocated to an opencast tunnel for noise protection reasons. The closest connection to the A6 motorway (Bern-Thun) is around 2 km from the town center. Jaberg itself has no connection to the public transport network. However, the Kiesen train station on the railway line from Bern to Thun is easily accessible.

history

Burial mounds from the Hallstatt period indicate an early settlement of the community area. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1259 under the name Jagberc . Later the names Jageberc (1273) and Jagberg (1299) appeared. According to tradition, the place name is composed of Ja (gd) and Berg (= castle) and thus has the original meaning of a castle from which hunts were undertaken.

In fact, in the Middle Ages, there was a small castle town here, which controlled the crossing of the Aare, which was important in early times, on the way between the Emmental and the Schwarzenburgerland . Jaberg belonged partly to the Lords of Blankenburg and partly to the Lords of Krauchthal. At the time of the Reformation , the village came under Bern rule and was assigned to the Seftigen district court and the Gelterfingen lower court (from the 18th century Vennergericht Mühledorf).

After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798), Jaberg belonged to the Seftigen district during the Helvetic Republic and from 1803 to the Seftigen District Office, which received the status of an official district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. The Aare ferry was replaced by a covered wooden bridge in 1835. The hamlet of Stoffelsrüti was an exclave of Jaberg until 1948 , after which it was assigned to the municipality of Noflen . Jaberg does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of Kirchdorf.
