The Viererfeld is an area of around 160,000 m², mainly used for agriculture in the north of the city of Bern . It is a common quarter in District II (Länggasse-Felsenau). It borders the Kleiner Bremgartewald in the west and north , and Studerstrasse and the Äussere Enge in the north . In the east, the avenue of the Engestrasse and the Vordere Engehalde form the end. Neufeld , Burgerheim , Engeried , Brückfeld , Alpenegg and a corner of the Grosse Schanze also border the quarter. No residents are given in 2019.

In addition to agricultural use, there are two areas with family gardens, a football field and a playground. The field of four is now owned by the Canton of Bern . In 2016, the population of the city of Bern approved the plan in a referendum to create a new city quarter on the site from around 2021.

history

In 1873 a small zoo with deer and bison was built below the Bierhübelis. This deer park is considered to be the forerunner of today's zoo.

In 1914, the Swiss National Exhibition took place on the Viererfeld and the neighboring Hochfeld to the west . In 1964, the canton of Bern acquired the field of four at a holding of 167,051 square meters for CHF 33,410,200 from the civic community for the construction of a university campus. The sales price of CHF 200 per square meter did not correspond to the full market value, but was linked to the condition that the field of four may only be used for university buildings and related facilities. The civic community used CHF 10,000,000 from the proceeds to establish the university foundation. (3) Since the canton was able to buy the former Tobler chocolate factory in 1982, the plan for a university campus on the Viererfeld was rejected and the university remained in the city. In 2014, the government council of the canton of Bern assured the city of Bern by purchasing law that it would sell half of the Viererfeld (84'482 m 2 ) for 51.1 million francs or CHF 605 per square meter and the remaining area of 78'210 square meters to be left in free building rights. The purchase right is exercised as soon as the zoning plan change is legally effective.

Planning a field of four / midfield

The city of Bern planned to build over the field of four as early as 2004. However, the corresponding proposal failed in the referendum with 51.7% no votes.

In November 2013, the city publicly launched new plans for a new city quarter on the quadruple and the neighboring midfield. The urban planning concept envisages that around half of the area will be used as a residential zone and the other half will remain as green space for public use. The public participation in November / December 2013 resulted in broad approval, as did resistance from local residents. Critics of the development, who joined together in the Viererfeld Nature 2.0 association, questioned the underlying growth forecasts and the compatibility with spatial planning legislation and the rules on crop rotation areas.

On June 5, 2016, the city population approved the development of the field of four with 53% yes-votes; only in the district of Länggasse / Felsenau affected a majority of 55% voted against. Objections to the zoning plan change are to be resolved by the end of 2016, then an urban development competition will take place in 2017 and architecture competitions for the individual building plots will follow from 2019. Implementation is scheduled to begin in 2021. Further referendums will be required for the approval of the building rights contracts with investors and for the loan for infrastructure and development costs as well as for the construction of a school building.

The RBS pierced by installing top dog park from the new access tunnel for the expansion of the station Bern . A construction pit was dug up to the level of the existing ski jump tunnel, from where the new tunnels will branch off.
