The main building of the University of Bern at Hochschulstrasse 4 in Bern was inaugurated on June 4, 1903 and is still the central building of the University of Bern today .

The old university had used the buildings of the Barfüsserkloster , which was dissolved in the Reformation in 1528, up on Herrengasse, south of the central library that still exists today. In 1897 the city made a generous purchase offer for these buildings, as they wanted to build a new casino here, today's Kultur Casino . This because the old casino had to give way to the Federal Palace.

The costs for the construction of the new main building of the University of Bern on the Grosse Schanze totaled 1.2 million Swiss francs (700,000 were contributed by the City of Bern and 500,000 by the Canton of Bern).

The architects Alfred Hodler and Eduard Joos won the competition for the new main building with their project. Your project is one of the last large representative buildings in Bern in the tradition of the 19th century. A massive, domed central pavilion emerges as the main accent of the building, four smaller pavilions at the corners and ends of the L-shaped wings take up the pavilion motif and subdivide the complex structure, which includes a courtyard on the side of the quarter. The main facade facing the city is characterized by its elaborate sandstone cladding with a roughly rusticated basement, mezzanine floor with upholstered ashlar and two upper floors unified with colossal columns. A lavishly furnished attic is attached to the weighty central pavilion, from where the stern gaze of science (an allegorical marble statue) watches over everyone who goes in and out.

In the representative part of the interior begins with a two-armed staircase, in the center of the building is the preciously plastered auditorium. The wings are in stark contrast to the festive sophistication of the central pavilion. With a view to the jubilee year 1984 (150 years of the university), the main building was carefully modernized. The new library of the law faculty was built in the underground of the courtyard.
