Main building of the General Guisan barracks

The barracks is a smaller common area of the city of Bern . It belongs to the urban district V Breitenrain-Lorraine and the statistical district Spitalacker . It includes the part of the General Guisan Barracks Beundenfeld , which lies west of the Papiermühlenstrasse. The military area continues to the east in the eponymous Beundenfeld . B. the National Equine Center . Other neighboring quarters are Spitalacker , Breitenrain , Breitfeld and Wankdorffeld .

In 2019, 1,097 inhabitants lived there, 893 of them Swiss and 204 foreigners.

Built in 1878 barracks 1999-2003 rehabilitated there has Bernese Office for Civil Protection , Sport and Military (BSM) located in the south there is the Bern University of Arts BUA, as the department of the Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH with the Department of Music and the Music Library. A concentration of the departments of health, social work, economics and the Bern University of the Arts on a common campus in Bern-Weyermannshaus is planned for autumn 2026.

Between Beundenfeldstrasse / Militärstrasse and Breitenrainplatz / Rodtmattstrasse a residential building (multi-storey row houses). There have always been concepts for converting the site (e.g. Quanterra 2007 project). Later, too, ideas went in the direction of cultural space and apartments, while retaining as many green spaces as possible for local recreation. However, the lease for the DDPS was extended by 20 years (until 2048) by the canton. Nevertheless, there are still voices that the quarter is "heavily underused".
