Amphibious lead ship

An amphibious command ship (NATO code LF) is a special type of ship that can only be found in the US Navy . It was designed and built as a command ship for amphibious operations. In addition to the task of preparing and conducting landing operations, the ships are able to carry out smaller landing operations themselves. There are smaller landing craft on board for this purpose. Mainly the ship type is used, with the help of the extensive electronics and radar equipment, but to guide and support other landing craft and boats before and during landing operations.

Two ships are currently in operational use as "Fleet Flagship": the USS Mount Whitney in the 6th Fleet and the sister ship USS Blue Ridge in the 7th Fleet . The hull is similar to that of the Iwo Jima class dropship , which has already been decommissioned. The ships were built between 1967 and 1971 at the Newport News Shb shipyards. and NY Philadelphia.
