district Kirchenfeld-Schosshalde

The Galgenfeld commercial zone is a common quarter in District IV ( Kirchenfeld-Schosshalde ) and the statistical district of Beundenfeld . It borders the Grosse Allmend and Kleine Allmend , Burgfeld , Schosshaldenwald / Friedhof , Beundenfeld / Baumgarten and the BernArena . In the east it forms the city limits to Ostermundigen in a small section .

Until 1826, death sentences were still carried out on the "Galgenhubel" in the Galgenfeld. There were three gallows, an erected wheel and the raven stone for beheadings. The place of execution was not lifted until 1870.

In 2019, 210 residents lived in the quarter, 114 of them Swiss and 96 foreigners.

Galgenfeld is also regarded as a common quarter with Burgfeld and is then the largest in terms of area in District V. At 72 meters, the former Swisscom high-rise is one of the highest buildings in the city. After it was Swisscom's headquarters for research and development from 1994 to 2104 and has been available for temporary use since 2020, it will be converted into a residential tower from 2020. The quarter has one of the largest shares of commercial and industrial companies in Bern.

The quarter, along with the Freudenberg and Murifeld quarters, is one of the quarters with a high relative poverty rate (defined when less than 50% of the median income of the city of Bern (CHF 49,693.00) is earned).

The HKB Hochschule der Künste Bern as part of the Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH is located here with the theater study area.
