Wittigkofen (also: Wittigkofe ) is a Bernese common quarter in the statistical district Murifeld and the district IV ( Kirchenfeld-Schosshalde ). It borders on the common quarters Weltpost , Murifeld , Sonnenhof , Schöngrün / Vermont , Merzenacker and Solacher / Melchenbühl . In the east it forms the city limit to Muri . In the north is Wittigkofen Castle , which gave the quarter its name.

In 2019, 2,608 people lived in the quarter, 1,876 of them Swiss and 732 foreigners.

The large Wittigkofen development, each with five point and chain buildings, was tackled after the development in the west. The planning was rated exemplary at the Expo 64 in Lausanne. The architect Otto Senn was commissioned with the project planning, the architects Thormann and Nussli Bern were commissioned with the execution. Originally, living space for up to 24,000 people, a hotel with 800 beds, a convention center, a huge shopping center with over 4,000 parking spaces and a motorway connection were to be built in several quarters (Wittigkofen, Thoracker, Hinteres Melchenbühl, Sollacker). After the oil crisis in 1973 and the subsequent economic slowdown, the project was rejected at the ballot box and only the first stage project "Upper Murifeld" was accepted on July 28, 1970. Construction began in 1972, the first apartments could be moved into in August 1973, and in 1980 the quarter was essentially completed. 1258 apartments were available to around 2280 residents in 2010. In a survey in 2010 it was found that the residents identify "very strongly" with their neighborhood and feel comfortable - the shopping opportunities and green spaces are particularly valued. The name Saali, which today still bears the terminus of tram line 8, is reminiscent of the Saaligut located there, the undulating terrain was called Salermösli as early as the 15th century.

The tilia Foundation maintains a care center for 90 residents in Wittigkofen and employs around 170 people there.

The tram line 8 ensures good connections to the center.
