The Wittigkofen Castle is a country estate in the town of Bern in the canton of Bern .

history

Originally the castle was a farm that was given by the Zähringers to their followers as a fief. The first feudal lord mentioned in a document was Heinricus de Wittenchoven in the middle of the 13th century. In 1271 a religious community bought the property from Heinrich von Seedorf , and in the following years there were several changes of ownership. In 1570 the castle was acquired by the Bernese mayor Beat Ludwig von Mülinen . In 1580 parts of the castle burned down. During the French invasion, the castle was devastated and looted by French troops on March 5, 1798. At times the headquarters of the defenders of the Ancien Régime was located there . The general staff of the opponents of the new Helvetic Republic also temporarily settled here. The castle is mentioned several times in the stories of Rudolf von Tavel .

Today the castle is privately owned and listed in the Swiss inventory of cultural assets of national importance (A objects) under KGS no .: 647.
