The Tellenburg is the ruin of a hilltop castle from the 12th century above the municipality of Frutigen in the canton of Bern . The castle was used to control the Lötschenpass near the Kandergrund rock castle .

around 1820

Around 1200 the castle was built by the barons of Kien. The fortifications were further expanded in the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1400, Bern acquired the entire Frutig Valley and made the Tellenburg the seat of the Bernese governor .

In 1798 the castle was converted into a poor institution. In 1885 she fell victim to a fire.
