The 3630  m above sea level. M. high Altels is a pyramid-shaped peak south of Gasterntals at the end of the Kandertal Valley in the Bernese Alps . It is connected to the somewhat higher Balmhorn via a narrow firn ridge. A special feature of the mountain is the northwest flank, a huge smooth surface.

The approximately 44 ° inclined hanging glacier on the north-west flank of the mountain, of which only remnants are left in the summit region and the Altels side glacier, has covered the Spittelmatte on Gemmiweg with ice masses at least twice . People and cattle were harmed:

  • When the glacier collapsed on August 18, 1792, four people and around 100 animals lost their lives.
  • On September 11, 1895, around 4 million cubic meters of ice fell over the mountain flank onto the Spittelmatte. Six people died under the ice, including Joseph Roten, Vice President of Leukerbad , as well as 158 cattle, nine pigs, a mule and a dog. A plaque on the Spittelmatte commemorates the disaster.

Ascent

The ascent to the summit takes you via steep tracks / tracks through rubble, scree, above 3400  m above sea level. M. over simple rock slabs with poles that are used to secure when wet, ice and snow. It is often combined with a visit to the Balmhorn (Firn, Fels I + UIAA ). The canton border between Bern and Valais runs over the summit .
