Mayan ruins of Lubaantun

Lubaantun is a Maya ruin that is located near the small town of San Pedro Columbia in Belize ( Central America ).

The former ceremonial site was built by the Maya in the late classical period (700-900 AD), when ball games were held alongside ceremonies and festivals .

The interesting thing about Lubaantun is the fact that the buildings were constructed from large limestone blocks with no binding mortar. Rather, the stones were hewn so precisely that they fit together exactly. However, in the following centuries (when the Maya had already given up the site) this circumstance led to the fact that many stone blocks became unstable due to the yielding subsoil and slipped off (the name Lubaantun also means "place of fallen stones" in the modern Maya language ) .

It is said that the famous and to this day mysterious Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull was also found in Lubaantun .
