Cuello

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cuello is a Mayan ruin near Orange Walk Town in the Orange Walk Province in Belize ( Central America ). It is one of the oldest documented Mayan settlements at all, with an estimated settlement period between 2000 BC. And 1000 AD

Cuello has temples, plazas, a small palace, residential buildings and two underground pantries. Through the discovery of jade pearls from an area 400 kilometers away, it was also possible to prove long-distance trade (approx. 600 BC).

In modern times, Cuello was first rediscovered in 1973 by Norman Hammond . The name "Cuello" is not a Mayan name, but comes from the nearby rum distillery "Cuello Brothers Distillery", on whose property the Mayan ruins were found.
