Lamanai
The Maya -Ruinen of Lamanai are in Belize ( Central America ) on the banks of a 48-kilometer inland lagoon of the New River .
The name Lamanai means something like "submerged crocodile" in the Mayan language . With a settlement period of approx. 3000 years it is one of the longest continuously populated Mayan cities. In the classical period around 700 AD, the population grew to over 20,000. In contrast to most other Mayan sites, Lamanai was still settled when the Spanish came to Belize in the 16th century.
The ruins can be reached by boat from Orange Walk Town across the New River.
