Cerros ruins

The Maya ruin Cerros is located in the Corozal District in Belize ( Central America ) on a peninsula between the Bay of Corozal and Lowry's Bight. The site was settled around 300 BC. And remained so until around 200 AD. The Spanish name refers to the earth-covered hills ( cerros ) under which the ancient pyramids lie.

There are three large acropolis , several plazas and pyramids in Cerros . The tallest building is about 22 meters high, with a foundation of 52 × 60 meters. The large stucco masks that came to light during the excavation have been covered again to protect them and are not visible. The city was mainly a maritime trade center for jade and obsidian .

In modern times, Cerros was first rediscovered by Thomas Gann in the 19th century, but more detailed research did not follow until 1973.
