Tzunu'un in El Pilar

El Pilar is the name of a Mayan ruin in the Cayo Province in Belize ( Central America ), around 50 kilometers as the crow flies from Tikal in Guatemala . The complex was inhabited from around 500 BC. In modern times, El Pilar was rediscovered in the 1970s, but a full investigation did not begin until 1993.

El Pilar was one of the major Mayan cities and has around 15 large pyramids with 25 plazas and many outbuildings. Six wide paths run through three districts - the total area is about 40 hectares. At the time of the wedding, there were believed to be 20,000 Maya living in the city. In contrast to other Mayan ruins, the complex in El Pilar has not yet been fully excavated and reconstructed, but is therefore also better protected from external influences.
