The Reichenbach Castle is a baroque palace on the river Aare in the municipality Zollikofen , Canton of Bern , Switzerland .

history

The Reichenbach lordship with its fairy tales, forests, bodies of water and inhabited areas existed until 1830 in an area that is identical to that of the present-day community of Zollikofen. The present castle was built in 1688 for Beat Fischer , the founder of the Bernese postal service, in place of a medieval castle. This was most likely due to a Roman river fort, which had been connected to the castrum on the narrow peninsula . The medieval castle was rebuilt and expanded to become a castle in its current form, while terraces supported by walls were built. An extensive French-style garden extends to the banks of the Aare, where a retaining wall forms the boundary to the river. The baroque painting of the courtroom also dates from 1688. The stucco work in the stairwell and on the upper floor was created on the occasion of an extension in 1719.

Several outbuildings were also erected around 1719, including a brewery north of the castle to refresh the mostly Bavarian postmen . In 1890 this and the entire castle complex were transferred from the von Fischer family to the Bavarian master brewer Joseph Hofweber, who two years later also acquired the properties of the Bavarian brewery in Interlaken , today's Rugenbräu AG . This is still the owner of the castle and has her depot for the Bern region in the former brewery building.

The Schloss Reichenbach restaurant is now housed in the building of the castle's former orangery, which was built around 1719 . There is also the right bank landing stage for the Reichenbach – Engehalbinsel ferry , which connects Zollikofen with the Engehalbinsel.
