history
Finds on the castle hill, unearthed during excavations in 1832, show that Muri was already settled in Roman times. As far as we know today, the name appears in documents for the first time in 1180 when a pastor Burkhard from the community did business with wealthy citizens.
At that time, Muri was still part of the Geristein dominion, which was conquered by the city of Bern more than 100 years later, in 1298. The rulership consisted of the four so-called parishes of Bolligen, Muri, Stettlen and Vechigen. When the up-and-coming city of Bern made its first conquest, it left the traditional rights of the municipalities untouched and thus laid the foundation for extensive municipal autonomy .
For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived in relatively stable circumstances, which the huge changes in European and Swiss history seemingly passed without a trace.
A complete structural and social transformation did not begin until the beginning of the 20th century. It was the result of industrialization and the move from the city to the countryside. In the decade 1920–1930, the population of the municipality grew from 2,435 to 3,938 or by 62 percent, never since then.
