The Muri Church near Bern

The Muri Church is a Reformed church building in the municipality of Muri bei Bern , Canton of Bern , Switzerland . It is located on Thunstrasse below Muri Castle .

It was originally consecrated to the Archangel Michael , belonged to the dean's office Münsingen of the old diocese of Constance and must have been founded very early, because a priest Burkhard from Muri ( Burchardus plebanus de Mure ) is mentioned as early as 1180 .

In 1881 the old church tower was demolished because it had cracked serious cracks as a result of an earthquake. "The new tower," wrote a contemporary, "will have a height of 150 feet, which is rare for our village church towers, and will be an ornament to the landscape". It was built in the neo-Gothic style. Count Friedrich von Pourtalès took over all costs of the new building in the Villa Mettlen .

The neo-Gothic style of the tower gave rise to criticism in later years. On the occasion of the renovation of the church in 1960, this tower was partially demolished and encased with the tower that stands today. Thus the remains of the old tower are still visible inside. The shape of today's tower was largely adopted from that of the Stephanus Church in Spiegel BE .

In autumn 2004 the interior of the church was renovated, the walls freshly painted, several rows of benches removed from the back of the church and the lighting modernized. The small remnants of a wall painting from the 17th century came to light on the north side of the choir.
