from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eduard Boss (born December 25, 1873 in Muri near Bern , † April 4, 1958 in Bern ) was a Swiss painter and draftsman. After the First World War he was one of the most famous Swiss painters and was a member of the Federal Art Commission from 1922 to 1926 .

Life

Eduard Boss was the youngest of 10 children of Christian Boss (died on July 24th, 1904) and Elisabeth Boss-Reusser (died on March 24th, 1890). From the autumn of 1857 the family lived in Muri near Bern, where the father had been elected senior teacher, in the so-called Lehrerstöckli, a house on the street opposite the church.

Like his older brother Gottfried (1857–1883), Eduard Boss received his first basic training in drawing and painting at the Bern School of Applied Arts . 1890–1891 he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva (including with Barthélemy Menn ), 1892–1896 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (including with Julius Diez ).

In 1897 Eduard Boss married Ida Flach; they took up residence in Münsingen . There began a fruitful creative period for the artist.

His study trips also took him to Paris , where he was probably Paul Cézanne's student for some time . In 1903 he returned to Switzerland and lived in Bern from 1907.

Boss was a representative of the "Bern School" led by Ferdinand Hodler , which also included Traugott Senn , Adolf Tièche , Emil Cardinaux , Ernst Linck , Emil Prochaska (1874–1948) and Max Eugen Brack (1878–1950).

Signature of Eduard Boss

Eduard Boss mainly chose motifs from his immediate surroundings: the landscape of the Aare valley , farmers and workers. In addition, he created portraits and self-portraits as well as still lifes . A stylistic affinity with Ferdinand Hodler, with whom he was on friendly terms, can be seen especially in the works around 1910.
