Julius Diez (born September 18, 1870 in Nuremberg , † May 15, 1957 in Munich ) was a German painter , graphic artist , draftsman and etcher .

He was a versatile artist and worked with bright and decorative colors. His work also includes applied arts , medals , plaques and bookplates .

Life

Diez was the son of a merchant and the nephew of the painter Wilhelm von Diez . He studied at the Munich School of Applied Arts and at the Munich Art Academy with Gabriel von Hackl and Rudolf von Seitz . He later taught at both institutes as a professor.

From a young age, Diez was an employee and one of the main illustrators of the magazine Die Jugend , but also worked for the magazine Simplicissimus . For the publishing house Schafstein & Co. (later Schaffstein) he illustrated the picture book Miaulina (1902) and made pictures of Knecht Ruprecht , Hänschen to Santa Claus and Der getreue Eckart . In 1904 Julius Diez took part in the first exhibition of the Deutscher Künstlerbund in the Royal Art Exhibition Building on Königsplatz in Munich with Im Maze (pastel), Der Kuppler (watercolor), The Uninvited Guest (colored pencil drawing) and the colored drawing Nasse Liebe . The following year, he won one of two second prizes in a tender for advertising drafts for joint advertising by the Stollwerck chocolate factory and the Henkell sparkling wine cellar .

Diez taught at the Munich School of Applied Arts from 1908 and at the Munich Art Academy from 1925, of which he was second president. Julius Diez was a member of the German Association of Artists. He was also president of the Munich Secession . At times he worked with Richard Dehmel .

In the Mosaic Hall , the former Green or craft hall of the New Town Hall in Hanover , a three-piece can be found in the black marble paneling mosaic image ( Triptych ) of a craftsman - triumphal procession in the Art Nouveau style , in the middle subtitled "hand finds gold in soil", right with the workshop signature " MOSAIC ROUGH CKER MUNICH "for a graphic presentation of Julius Diez. A triptych made in 1913 is located at the front of the staircase of the Botanical Institute of the University of Munich at the Botanical Garden Nymphenburg . In keeping with the building's mission, it is dedicated to Litteris et floribus [science and flora]. In 1929, Julius Diez designed the commemorative symbol for the 60th birthday of Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria .

Diez's students included Eduard Ege , Franz Paul Glass , Eugen Maria Cordier, and Oswald Voh .
