history

Vehlefanz is a foundation of the Wends . The first traces of Liutizen settlement date from the 6th century near the Botscheberg . The first documentary mention comes from the year 1241, in which B. de velewan is named in an inheritance dispute . The first church in the village was built at the end of the 12th century as part of the Christianization of Brandenburg. Today's church goes back to a field stone building from the Middle Ages.

A brick barn is mentioned in 1451, other mentions date from the 18th century.

The first mention of a miller in the church book comes from 1649 after the end of the Thirty Years War . The first windmill was built on site in 1711; the farmers from Vehlefanz and Eichstätt were required to eat . The meal was compulsory until 1810, after which several new mills were built around Vehlefanz, including the post mill that can still be seen today .

In 1832 the Bärenklau Remontedepot was established , which supplied the Prussian army with replacement horses.

In the times of the GDR , the village was mainly characterized by agriculture by various agricultural production cooperatives (LPG) such as Frischer Wind and Freier Bauer, from which Schwanteland GmbH developed after the fall of the Wall and is now one of the largest chicory producers in Germany.

In 1993, the first new school in Brandenburg after the fall of the Wall was built with the Rhinoceros Primary School.

Townscape

The Angerdorf Vehlefanz extends mainly along a main road, today's L117. To the south is the village church at the entrance to the village, the road runs along the historic village green and to the north the post mill stands just before the village exit. The remains of Vehlefanz Castle lie on a small rise on the edge of the village .

The post mill from 1815 has been protected as a technical monument since 1977 and equipped as a museum. It is the only completely preserved windmill in the district. The community has owned the windmill since 2011.

Religions

In addition to the Protestant village church and its parish, the Evangelical Free Church Parish of Oberkrämer, based in Vehlefanz, is also active in village life.

The free church was founded in 1964 during the GDR era in neighboring Schwante, where it also built its first chapel. The authorities tolerated the community, which at that time had about 20 active members. After the chapel became too small for the congregation, which at that time had around 100 active members, around the year 2000, it set up a congregation center in Vehlefanz in 2005. Around 200 people attend the service on Sundays. The community also organizes a summer camp for young people from all over Germany at the Mühlensee.
