Vehlefanz village church

The Protestant village church Vehlefanz is a listed church in the Brandenburg town of Vehlefanz . The core of the church is a late medieval field stone building from the 15th century, with older masonry from the 12th / 13th century. The predecessor church dating from the 19th century could be included. A baroque redesign took place in the 18th century .

history

In the course of the Christianization of the area, a church in Vehlefanz can be expected in the late 12th century. The first documentary mention, however, comes from a document from the Spandau monastery from 1420. During this time, the stretched field stone building with a square west tower that forms the core of today's church was built. The edge masonry and the edging of the openings are made of bricks. At the beginning of the 18th century, the church was given a three-sided choir closure and its cross-shaped floor plan through additions to the nave. The window openings were enlarged and the entire building was plastered for the first time. The tower dome dates from 1738 when the old dome was completely demolished. The first major renovation since 1750 has been taking place since 2009 and is expected to last until 2017. In 2015 the interior was renovated, which is why the church could not be entered. On September 23, 2017, the church was reopened with a parish festival and service.

architecture

The building is cross-shaped, made of field stones and mostly plastered. The mighty tower forms the western end. While the lower part, made of field stones, is late Gothic and has some Renaissance elements, the tower dome with slipped parts and an open lantern is baroque. The choir on the east side is closed polygonally.

The spacious interior of the church has a coved ceiling. L-shaped built-in galleries are located in the western part of the ship and in the northern extension that is open to it. The southern extension serves as a vestibule and is closed to the ship. The tower hall has a barrel vault .

Furnishing

In the church there is an altarpiece in Renaissance style from 1585. This was from the family von Bredow donated. Most of the figures within the composite altar are older than the altar itself. The central picture depicts a crucifixion scene with Mary and John. The crucifix probably dates from the 12th / 13th. Century. The bulbous pulpit, like the box stalls, dates from the 18th century. A large triumphal cross with reliefs at the four circular cross ends is dated to the 14th century.

A high quality epitaph by Dietrich von Bredow and his wife from 1589 follows the style of the altar in its design. A painting of the resurrection showing the kneeling donors is framed by double columns, a coat of arms frieze and fittings . The death shield of Marcus von der Lüttke dates from the end of the 17th century, while the tombstone of Alexander von Bredow in the choir was created in the second quarter of the 17th century. It shows the armored deceased as a full-length high relief.

Four tombstones of the Gans Edle zu Putlitz family are kept in the vestibule , showing the deceased in full-length reliefs with coats of arms.

The organ of Gottlieb Scholtze , a student of Joachim Wagner , came into the church as part of the baroque renovations. It has been in Vehlefanz since 1756 and has eleven stops on a manual and pedal .
