Vehlefanz Castle

The castle Vehlefanz is the ruins of a moated castle in the district Vehlefanz the municipality Oberkrämer in Oberhavel , about 15 kilometers northwest of Berlin.

The name Vehlefanz could be derived from the Slavic words "velij" = large and "vas" = beard. In addition to an artificially piled earth mountain, only the ruins of a tower with a small section of brick wall from the 14th century moated castle are left.

The early castle complex was a tower hill castle (Motte), which is rare in the area, of which the 7 meter high tower hill (previously safely surrounded by palisades ) with a base diameter of 62 meters and a plateau diameter of 39 meters is evidence. The approximately 7 meter wide moat was almost completely filled in in 1897. There was an embankment in the northwest of the plant.

history

To the south of the village is an artificially raised mountain ( Bosselberg ), which probably also contains Slavic material. On it stood an early German castle - probably dating back to the time of the Ascanian settlement. It is unclear whether this castle was the residence of the knight Buchard von Vehlefanz - son of the Spandau bailiff Albrecht, who was mentioned several times in the middle of the 13th century. Apart from the castle hill, there are no remains of this castle today.

The first documented owner of the village is Marquard von Lauterbach. In 1355 Kopke von Bredow bought the village. The village had been owned by the von Redern family since 1375 at the latest. The gentlemen von Redern have a new moated castle built for the old - now probably no longer habitable - stronghold. In 1412 the Nuremberg burgrave Friedrich VI beats near the castle . von Hohenzollern (from 1415 to 1440 as Friedrich I. Elector of Brandenburg) the Pomeranian dukes Otto and Casimir.

A new office building was built in 1786 to replace the moated castle. Stones from the previous moated castle were probably also used for this new building. The new office building served Napoleon briefly as headquarters in 1812.
