Barthélemy Menn
Barthélemy Menn (born May 20, 1815 in Geneva ; † October 11, 1893 there ) was a Swiss landscape painter .
Life
The young man began his art studies in Geneva with Wolfgang-Adam Töpffer and Leonard Lugardon, before he went to Paris in 1833 to study with Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres . In 1835 he followed this to Rome . In 1838 he returned to Paris, where he was attracted by the landscape painters Charles-François Daubigny , Théodore Rousseau and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot . He also socialized with George Sand (he taught their son Maurice Dudevant), Chopin and Eugène Delacroix . In 1843 he finally settled in Geneva.
Barthélemy Menn is best known for his poetic, idyllic landscapes. With Alexandre Calame he was the main representative of the Geneva School of the first half of the 19th century. He was in contact with Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (with whom he decorated the great salon of the castle of Gruyère in 1859-1857) Gustave Courbet and Jacques Alfred van Muyden .
For many years he was a professor at the Geneva Art School ( École des Beaux-Arts ). His most famous student (from 1872 to 1878) was Ferdinand Hodler . He also taught Albert Bartholomé , Auguste Baud-Bovy , Eugène Burnand , Édouard Castres , Albert Gos , John Graff, Edouard Jeanmaire, François Furet, Simon Durand and Alfred Rehfous.
