Paul-Albert Bartholomé Hon.RA (born August 29, 1848 in Thiverval-Grignon , Département Seine-et-Oise , † October 31, 1928 in Paris ) was a French painter and sculptor .

Life

Albert Bartholomé was a student of Barthélémy Menno in Geneva and later worked under the direction of Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871) Bartholomé served in the French army. After the war he returned to Paris and devoted himself to painting.

Albert Bartholomé only turned to sculpture after the death of his wife Marie-Louise (1849–1887) when he made her tomb. He had a close friendship with the painters Edgar Degas and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes . He was best known for the cenotaph in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris. He worked on it from 1889 to 1899.

Another well-known work is the monument to Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the Paris Panthéon .

Albert Bartholomé was a member of the academies in England , Scotland , Spain and Belgium . He won the Grand Sculpture Prize at the 1900 Paris World's Fair . In 1904 he was invited to the international art exhibition in the Kunstpalast as a representative of the French sculptors, as was Auguste Rodin . In 1895 Bartholomé was appointed Officier de la Légion d'Honneur and in 1911 Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur. He received an additional honor in 1921 when he was elected honorary member (Hon. RA) of the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

His sculptures and paintings are now owned by the Musée d'Orsay , for example , but also by the Art Institute of Chicago , the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia.

Most recently, around 10,000 euros were paid for his small bronze statue on the art market.
