Marc Fehlmann (* 1965 in Basel ) is a Swiss art historian , museologist and was director of the Basel Historical Museum (HMB) from June 1, 2017 to August 2020 .

Life

After his military service, Marc Fehlmann completed a traineeship at Galerie Kornfeld in Bern and from 1987 to 1989 at Sotheby’s in London. He then studied Classical Archeology, Art History and English Literature at the Universities of Basel and Zurich, and from 1994 to 1995 Museum Studies at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where he graduated from Michael Kauffmann on British Collectors of 19th Century Swiss Art . In 1998 he did his doctorate at the University of Zurich under Franz Zelger on Theodore Gericault's Zurich sketchbook .

During his studies, Fehlmann was assistant to Hans Armin Lüthy at the Swiss Institute for Art Research SIK-ISEA in Zurich , and from 1996 to 1999 he was Franz Zelger's research assistant at the University of Zurich . In 1999 he became curator of the graphic collection of the Kunstmuseum Bern , where he was appointed curator of all collections in 2002. Under Matthias Frehner , who was newly elected director in 2002 , he was one of the third of the workforce who left the Kunstmuseum Bern voluntarily. He returned to the University of Zurich in 2004 with a scholarship from the Swiss National Science Foundation and did research on honorary monuments.

From 2006 to 2008 he was Assistant Professor and from 2008 to 2010 Associate Professor at the Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta (Northern Cyprus) and taught for one semester at Oxford University . This was followed by a research stay as a Senior Fellow at the Collegium Budapest in Budapest and, in spring 2012, the appointment as director of the Oskar Reinhart Museum in Winterthur, which was then threatened with closure . In 2015, Fehlmann organized the most successful exhibition in the history of the museum with the presentation of the private painting collection of the entrepreneur and former Federal Councilor Christoph Blocher . From January 2016 to May 2017 he was director of collections at the German Historical Museum in Berlin. At that time, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung called it a "stroke of luck for Berlin".

Since June 1, 2017, he has been the director of the Basel Historical Museum (HMB), succeeding Marie-Paule Jungblut and the interim director Gudrun Piller .

Fehlmann repeatedly took a stand on current cultural-political issues and is considered a “man of clear words”.

In August 2020, he was relieved of his position by the President of the Basel government, Elisabeth Ackermann, after the failure of a mediation procedure ordered in January.
