Hans A. Lüthy

Hans Armin Lüthy (born April 30, 1932 - † March 8, 2009 ) was a Swiss art historian . From 1963 to 1994 he was director of the Swiss Institute for Art Research .

life and work

Lüthy studied art history at the University of Zurich and was assistant to Gotthard Jedlicka (1899–1965). From there he moved in 1963 to the management of the Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK) founded in 1951 by Marcel Fischer (1906–1962). In the thirty years of its management, the research institute gained international recognition. As a result of his operation, the SIK was accepted into the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences in 1971. In 1981, the institute was recognized by the Federal Council as an eligible research institution .

In the USA Lüthy was affiliated with the College Art Association (CAA), and at the Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities he was a scholar in 1985 and 1986. One focus of his research was the works of Théodore Géricault and Ferdinand Hodler . He was the first to take up the topic of collector's history .

After resigning as director of the Swiss Institute for Art Research in 1994, he devoted himself to promoting young talent in connection with the German Forum for Art History in Paris , headed by Thomas W. Gaehtgens , and was able to provide funding or support for numerous art historians. The University of Neuchâtel recognized Lüthy in 2000 by awarding him an honorary doctorate . Until 2006 he was a scientific advisor to the Historical Lexicon of Switzerland .

He found his final resting place in the Feldbrunnen-St. Niklaus .
