Elisabeth Ackermann (politician)

Elisabeth Ackermann (born June 18, 1963 in Therwil ) is a Swiss politician ( Greens ). In autumn 2016 she was first elected to the government of the canton of Basel-Stadt and then to the government president.

Life

Elisabeth Ackermann grew up in Therwil. At the end of high school, she passed a scientific Matura . She first studied economics for one semester before successfully taking the entrance exam for the Basel Music Academy . Until her election to the Basel government, she worked as a guitar teacher, since 1997 at the Liestal high school .

As a 13-year-old girl, she was already politically involved in the anti-nuclear movement . In her mid-twenties she was one of the founding members of the GAP (Green Alternative Party), which later merged with other groups to form the Basel-Stadt Green Party . She represented the Greens for ten years in the inspection of the small classes and then on the school board of the grammar school on Münsterplatz .

In 2006 she was elected to the Grand Council of Basel-Stadt , where she focused on economic and financial issues. She was a member of the Economic and Tax Commission until 2012 and of the Finance Commission from 2012. She was elected Vice President of both commissions. From 2009 to 2011 she was parliamentary group president of the Green Alliance , and since 2012 she has been co-president of the Green Party in Basel-Stadt. In 2013 she became a member of the Bureau of the Grand Council, in 2014 she became a governor (President-elect) and in 2015 she became President of the Grand Council.

After Guy Morin , the first Green member of the government of Basel-Stadt, announced his resignation , Elisabeth Ackermann was nominated by her party as a candidate for this office in March 2016. On October 23, 2016, she was elected to the government in the first ballot. In the election to the regional council that took place at the same time, she received the most votes.

Elisabeth Ackermann is married and the mother of two grown children.
