Hans-Peter Wessels

Hans-Peter Wessels (born September 30, 1962 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ). Since 1 February 2009 he is Councilor of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and Head of the Construction and Transport Department.

Life

Wessels was born with South African citizenship and received Swiss citizenship in 1974 . He grew up in Montreal and St. Gallen. In 1981 he joined the SP. From 1982 to 1986 he studied at the ETH Zurich and from 1986 to 1990 wrote a dissertation in biochemistry at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel . He then worked as a research assistant and project manager in various positions until 1998 . From 1998 to 2000 he was director ad interim of the national high-performance computing center in Manno . From 2000 to 2005 he was Managing Director of the Basel-Zurich Pharmaceutical Center at the University of Basel. From 2006 he was managing director of BaselArea , the economic development agency for the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft . He was elected to the government council on September 14, 2008 in the first ballot. In November 2019, he announced his resignation at the end of the current legislative period.

Wessels has lived in Basel since 1986. He has been married since 1993 and has two children.
