Dürr joined the Basel Young Liberals very early on and later made a career for the Liberal Democratic Party of Basel (LDP), where he became Vice President. From 1997 to 2002 he was a member of the inspection team at the Leonhard grammar school . In 2005 he broke with the LDP and moved to the FDP Basel-Stadt , where he quickly became part of the management. In 2003 he was elected to the Grand Council and since 2006 he has chaired the Finance Commission. In 1999, 2007 and 2011 Dürr ran for the National Council , for the first time for the LDP.

After the death of Peter Malama in September 2012, Dürr would actually have been the first to move up to the National Council, but because of his candidacy for the government council and the regional council, he renounced in favor of the Basel FDP president Daniel Stolz .

With the aim of taking over the seat of the outgoing Security Director Hanspeter Gass , Dürr ran for the general government election in 2012. He also stood against the previous Guy Morin as a candidate for the regional council. In the first ballot on October 28, 2012, he achieved the best result of all new candidates with 17,038 votes, but failed to achieve an absolute majority. In the second ballot on November 25, 2012, after the other candidates had withdrawn, he ran against Christian Müller and Damian Heizmann, who were unknown to the general public, and was elected with 17,300 votes. In the election of the district president, Dürr was clearly defeated by the previous Morin in the second ballot. Dürr took office on February 1, 2013 and took over the security department.
