The Gymnasium Leonhard is a linguistically and musically influenced high school in the Swiss city of Basel , which is located on the Kohlenberg . It came into being in 1997 through the merger of the Gymnasium am Kohlenberg and the Holbein-Gymnasium , both of which linked to a significant extent to the old tradition of the girls ' high school .

history

In the founding year of 1777, the Society for the Good and Charitable Basel (GGG) was planning a “daughter's school” to improve the educational and career opportunities of girls. The school, which then opened in March 1781 on Freie Strasse , was closed again after a two-year trial phase.

In January 1813, a “daughter's school” was founded, which should endure. In 1884 the school moved to a newly constructed building on the Kohlenberg. In 1899 the grammar school department was opened, which enabled the girls in Basel to take a high school diploma . In 1906 the daughter's school, popularly known as the Affenkasten , was expanded according to plans by Theodor Hünerwadel , and in 1913 it was federally recognized as a high school diploma. With the School Act of 1929, the school was renamed the "Girls High School" and divided into three sections:

In 1959 the school was separated into girls' high schools I and II. The girls' grammar school II moved into a newly built building that houses today's Holbein further education school. In 1968, coeducation was introduced in Basel grammar schools, with which boys were also allowed to attend schools. The former girls' grammar schools I and II were now called Kohlenberg and Holbein grammar schools. In the course of the grammar school duration shortened from eight to five years by the Basel school reform, these two schools were merged again in 1997. Since then, the grammar school has had the current name «Gymnasium Leonhard».

In 2013 there was the anniversary "200 years of higher girls' education in Basel". The philosopher Andreas Urs Sommer is one of the well-known graduates of the school (Gymnasium am Kohlenberg) .
