Edward Babák

Edward Babák (born June 8, 1873 in Smidary near Nový Bydžov , † May 29, 1926 in Brno ) was a Czech physiologist. He also dealt with general biology and the mental development of children.

Life

From 1884 to 1892 Babák attended high school in Jičín and after 1893 began studying medicine and physiology at Prague University . In 1898 he took up the position of assistant to Professor František Mareš at the Physiological Institute. In 1903 he started as a lecturer in general physiology at the Charles University, in 1919 Babák became a full professor and on April 16, 1923 MVDr. honoris causa appointed. From 1919 to 1921 he was also rector of the veterinary school, later rector of the pedagogical college, dean of the medical faculty, rector of Masaryk University in Brno and head of the physiological and biological institute, of which he was the founder.

Babák also founded the Biological Society and the Medical Association in Brno, the Moravian Scientific Association, the Masons Lodge in Brno and the Society for Children's Research. He wrote for the magazine Příroda (Nature) and is considered to be the co-founder of the Akvaristický obzor magazine . He was a corresponding member of the Czech Academy of Sciences , the National Council of Researchers and a corresponding member of the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences.

In his scientific work he mainly dealt with physiology and morphology . He achieved world renown through his research results in the field of respiratory physiology.

In addition to purely scientific books, he also wrote popular scientific literature on exercise and sport. His philosophical works dealt with the biological teaching of the time.
