In 1982 Malama joined the FDP Basel-Stadt . From 2005 to 2009 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt . There he was a member of the business audit committee.

In the federal elections in 2007 , Malama succeeded in entering the National Council at the expense of his party colleague Urs Schweizer , who replaced Johannes Randegger, who had stepped down in December 2006 . In the elections held on 23 October 2011 he was re-elected.

The party was awaiting his candidacy for the Basel government council elections in 2008; but since Malama did not make himself available for the office, the bourgeois parties ran with only three instead of four candidates. The successor for Malama in the National Council was the Basel FDP President Daniel Stolz , as Baschi Dürr resigned in favor of a candidacy for the Basel City Council.
