The Basler FDP. The Liberalen or FDP Basel-Stadt (formerly the Free Democratic Party of Basel-Stadt ) is a liberal political party in the canton of Basel-Stadt . It belongs to the “ FDP. Liberal Switzerland ”, as does the Liberal-Democratic Party of Basel-Stadt . Goals and program

The Basel FDP defines itself as a liberal party that politicizes on a broad social basis, which aims to give all citizens the highest possible degree of personal freedom and thus to transfer as much personal responsibility as possible. Their central liberal values are freedom, public spirit and progress. As in its previous history dating back to 1848, the FDP wants to base such achievements on these basic values as the economic and social order of Switzerland, federalism, direct democracy, the rule of law, the militia system and openness to the world.

Instead of strict state planning, excessive regulations and increasing demands on state services, the party advocates a solution-oriented and competitive state that remains capable of acting by limiting and reviewing its tasks and expenses. The FDP advocates cost-neutrality for the canton's center services and calls for market-based framework conditions for Basel's economy and trade, which enable the maintenance and increase of jobs and the safeguarding of social services. She believes that solidarity, a sense of community and tolerance, which cannot and should not be prescribed by the state, are important.

Party history

Several free-spirited associations from Basel founded the Verein der Liberalen Basels (United Liberals) in 1869 , which was a loosely organized umbrella organization; the actual party politics was carried out by its parliamentary group, the association of liberal councils . The most important personalities of the founding period were Wilhelm Klein , first president of the United Liberals; Christian Friedrich Göttisheim , first central president of the FDP Switzerland 1894–1896, Basel Council of States 1881–1896 and President of the Council of States 1891; Ernst Brenner , so far the only free-thinking Federal Councilor in Basel ; Hermann Kinkelin , Basel Grand Council 1867–1902, Grand Council President 1877/1879 and National Council 1890–1899. The first neighborhood association (section) of the Freedom Democratic Party of Basel was founded in 1882 with the name Spalen- und Stadtquartierverein , a year later the association Freisinniger Kleinbasler was formed , with Christian Friedrich Göttisheim serving as the founding president from 1883 to 1888.
