Christian Friedrich "Fritz" Göttisheim (born March 28, 1837 in Wildberg , Württemberg , † July 12, 1896 in Basel ) was a Swiss politician . He was the first president of the Free Democratic Party .

biography

Göttisheim had lived in Basel since he was six years old, and in 1856 he was naturalized in Basel. He studied natural sciences in Tübingen and Basel and, after completing his doctorate, became a teacher, later a private lecturer in health care. He was also the editor of various liberal newspapers, including a. 1882–1896 with the Basler Nachrichten , as successor to Emil Frey .

As the leading representative of the Basel Liberals, he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt in 1864 and to the Council of States in 1881 ; he was a member of both parliaments until his death. He was mainly concerned with social policy , so he advocated compulsory health and accident insurance .

From 1883 to 1886 he was president of the “Democratic Association”, which was founded in 1878 to pool the canton's liberal forces. In 1883 he was involved in the founding of the “Verein Freisinniger Kleinbasler”, a Basel neighborhood association, which he also presided over until 1888.

Göttisheim was President of the Council of States in 1891/92 and the first President of the Swiss Democratic Party from 1894–1896. He made a significant contribution to the drafting and enforcement of the statutes of the all-Swiss party established in Olten .

He was a member of the Evangelical Reformed Church Council and from 1874–1889 the Synod of the Canton. Together with Theodor Hoffmann-Merian (1819–1888), Göttisheim founded the religiously free-spirited community association “Z + S” in Kleinbasel , which he also presided over.

His son Emil Göttisheim was a Basel councilor and national councilor . He was one of the first to demand women's suffrage in Switzerland .
