Paul Scherrer (born April 20, 1862 in Sedel, Münchwilen TG , † March 10, 1935 in Basel ) was a Swiss politician .

biography

Paul Scherrer, son of a small farmer and landlord, studied law in Munich and Basel . After receiving his doctorate in 1884, he worked as a lawyer and notary in Basel, where he also acquired citizenship in 1895. From 1897 he ran his own law firm. In addition to his professional activity, Scherrer, who belonged to the right wing of the Free Democratic Party (FDP), was also politically active. He was a member of the Grand Council from 1887 to 1908 , which he presided over three times (1894, 1896 and 1906). From 1896 to 1919 he represented the canton of Basel-Stadt in the Council of States and was its president in 1907. As a long-time member of the central board of the FDP, he was one of the leading party exponents until he retired from politics in 1919.

Paul Scherrer was a co-founder of the "International Association for Statutory Labor Protection" at the International Labor Protection Conference in Paris in 1900. He was involved in making the headquarters of the International Association (since 1900) and its International Labor Office (since 1901) possible in Basel.

In later years Scherrer was a leading member of the board of large industries (Ciba, Feldschlösschen and others).
