Johann Hirter

Johann Daniel Hirter (born May 5, 1855 in Bern ; † October 4, 1926 there ) was a Swiss politician ( FDP ).

Hirter attended schools in Bern and then did a commercial apprenticeship. From 1880 he owned a freight forwarding and coal company.

From 1890 to 1894, Hirter represented the FDP in the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern . He also presided over the FDP of the Canton of Bern. From 1894 until 1919 Hirter was a member of the National Council, and from December 5, 1905 to December 3, 1906 he was President of the National Council . From 1898 to 1903 he was President of the FDP Switzerland.

As a wholesaler for coal, he was an important representative of economic interests. As a representative of Bern, he was elected to one of the first members of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Federal Railways on October 24, 1900 . In this function he campaigned for the construction of railway lines such as the Lötschbergbahn . From July 17, 1906 to April 14, 1923 he was President of the Bank Council of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) .
