Ernst Schürch

Ernst Schürch (born June 3, 1875 in Grosshöchstetten ; † January 26, 1960 in Bern ; legal resident in Rohrbach ) was a Swiss journalist . Schürch was best known as the long - time editor -in- chief of the Bern daily newspaper Der Bund and through his uncompromising attitude towards the Third Reich .

Life

Schürch was born into the farming family of Johannes Schürch and Elisabeth, born Ellenberger. He graduated from schools in Burgdorf with a high school diploma and then began studying history and linguistics in Bern and Lausanne . He then worked as a private tutor in England and as a teacher at the Trogen Cantonal School and then completed a second degree in law , after which he obtained the advocacy certificate in 1906 .

In 1906 he became president of the court in Wangen a. A. , from 1908 to 1911 he was public prosecutor for the Bernese Seeland in Biel and from 1911 to 1912 for the Bernese Mittelland in Bern. In 1912 he joined the editorial office of the Bund and was its editor-in-chief from 1925 until his retirement in September 1941 . As a member of the FDP from 1914 to 1918 and 1922 to 1933, he was Bern's Grand Councilor and from 1920 to 1925 Bern City Council (both legislative branches ). In 1944 the University of Bern honored him with the title of Dr. H. c.

During the Second World War , the German press attaché in Switzerland, Georg Trump, tried from July 9, 1940 on the publishers of the daily newspapers Der Bund , Neue Zürcher Zeitung and Basler Nachrichten , which were already banned in Germany , to get their editors-in-chief Ernst Schürch, Willy , who were clearly critical of Germany Bretscher and Albert Oeri were deposed. However, with little success: Bretscher and Oeri remained in office; Schürch was advised to resign by the Bund publisher Fritz Pochon, but he stayed in his post until he retired the following year. Schürch represented a social liberalism and was instrumental in rebuilding the Bernese liberalism after the crisis from 1919 to 1922. He also campaigned for the promotion of dialect.

Private

Schürch was married to Vera Evelina Pozzy since 1906. One of her three sons was the FDP politician Gerhart Schürch (1910-1994), the Bern city, large and council and 1971-1979 National Council was and in 1940 as a colonel and General Staff Officer of the so-called " officer conspiracy for unconditional resistance belonged."
