Albert Oeri

Jakob Albert Oeri (born September 21, 1875 in Schaffhausen ; † December 22, 1950 in Riehen ) was a Swiss historian , journalist , publicist and politician .

Life

Albert Oeri, son of the high school teacher Johann Jakob Oeri, attended schools in Basel and then studied Classical Philology and History in Basel , Göttingen and Berlin . During his student days he joined the Swiss Zofingerverein . In 1899 he received his doctorate from the University of Basel. phil., 1900-1901 he worked as a high school teacher in Gotha . After his return to Basel in 1901 he was an editor for the Allgemeine Schweizer Zeitung and after 1902 for the Basler Nachrichten , in which the Allgemeine Schweizer Zeitung went up. 1902–1911 he headed the domestic and 1911–1925 the foreign editorial team. 1925-1949 he worked as editor-in-chief.

Albert Oeri was also politically active. As a member of the Liberals, he sat in the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt from 1908 to 1948 ; 1931-1949 he took a seat in the National Council and in 1947 was its age-old president .

After Hitler came to power in Germany, Oeri turned against National Socialism as a journalist and politician and became one of the most important exponents of intellectual national defense and a co-founder of the National Resistance Campaign . He advocated the admission of refugees and the maintenance of freedom of the press . He was therefore also one of the editors-in-chief, for whose elimination in 1940 the entry of the two hundred requested the Federal Council. Albert Oeri was also a member of the Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt commission and president of the Basler Kunstverein .

In 1945 the universities of Bern and Basel awarded him honorary doctorates . A street in Riehen is named after Albert Oeri.
