Emil Dürr

Emil Dürr (born December 3, 1883 in Bözingen , † February 12, 1934 in Basel ; legal resident in Pratteln ) was a Swiss historian and archivist .

Life

The son of a baker studied history at the universities of Geneva , Munich , Berlin and Basel , where he also received his doctorate in 1908. From 1909 he worked in the Basel-Stadt State Archives , and from 1914 to 1920 in the Swiss Economic Archives there . In 1918 he became an associate professor and in 1925 a full professor at the University of Basel. From 1931 he held the chair for general history with a special focus on Swiss history.

Scientifically, Dürr dealt primarily with Swiss history in the late Middle Ages and with Jacob Burckhardt . He was editor or co-editor of the first two volumes of the six-volume collection of files on the history of the Basel Reformation.

During the state strike in 1918, Dürr took part in building the vigilante group. In 1920 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) . His second marriage was to Adrienne von Speyr .

Emil Dürr died in an accident in 1934. He found his final resting place in the Hörnli cemetery .
