Felix Staehelin

Felix Staehelin or Stähelin (born December 28, 1873 in Basel ; † February 20, 1952 there ) was a Swiss ancient historian .

Life

Felix Staehelin, son of a silk ribbon manufacturer, studied classical philology and ancient history in Basel , Bonn and Berlin and received his doctorate in 1897 with a dissertation on the Galatians . After completing his studies, Felix Staehelin was able to undertake a research trip to Italy and Greece with the financial support of his uncle Karl Staehelin-Burkhardt (1850–1902) . In Greece he learned a. a. Know Otto Rubensohn . Staehelin documented the trip in his diary entries.

1902–1907 he worked as a high school teacher in Winterthur and Basel. From 1907 he was a private lecturer, from 1917 associate professor and from 1931–1937 full professor of ancient history at the University of Basel . He published academic papers on Asia Minor and Roman history. His overview of Switzerland in Roman times , published in 1927, was long considered a standard work and has been reprinted twice. In addition, Staehelin wrote numerous articles for Paulys Realencyclopadie of classical antiquity . 1929–1934 he played a key role in the (first) Jacob Burckhardt complete edition.

Since 1939 he was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and since 1950 of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin .

In 1902 Staehelin married Martha Schwarz (1874–1951). They had three children together. Staehlin was Jakob Burckhardt's great-nephew .
