Bernhard Wyss (classical philologist)

Bernhard Wyss (born October 22, 1905 in Chaluet near Court ; † September 6, 1986 ) was a Swiss classical philologist .

Life

Bernhard Wyss attended the humanistic canton school in Aarau and studied classical philology and ancient history at the universities of Zurich and Basel . From 1930 he supervised the recently introduced elementary courses in Greek and Latin. In 1933 he received his doctorate with Peter von der Mühll with a dissertation on Antimachos von Kolophon .

After receiving his doctorate Wyss worked at the Humanities College of the city of Basel , where he was appointed in 1933 (age 27) as rector. In 1943, while on active service , he qualified as a professor in Classical Philology. In 1945 he was entrusted with the representation of the Department of Ancient History at the University of Basel, since the retirement of Felix Staehelin was vacant (1944). In 1952 Wyss was appointed as the successor to his teacher Peter von der Mühll to the Graecist chair, which he held until his retirement (1976). In the academic year 1967/1968 he was the rectorate of the university. From 1957 to 1972 he was President of the Federal Matura Commission.
