Antimachus of Colophon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antimachus of Colophon was an ancient Greek poet and grammarian from Colophon . It was probably not very long after the middle of the 5th century BC. Born and perhaps still lived in the early 4th century BC. Chr.

With his two main works, the epic Thebais (about the two mythical Theban Wars ) and an elegy cycle named after his late lover Lyde , which dealt with the myths about the death of separated lovers, he was the founder of the epic . As such, he was the forerunner and model of the Alexandrians , who placed him right after Homer because of his erudition . The fragments of his poetry show a harsh and sought-after, often bombastic language and reveal more art and learning than poetry. As a grammarian, he did a review of Homeric poems.
