Josef Delz

Josef Delz (born March 25, 1922 in Möhlin ; † June 13, 2005 in Basel ) was a Swiss classical philologist .

Live and act

Delz studied Classical Philology, German Philology and Comparative Linguistics at the University of Basel . After completing his doctorate, he worked in Oxford and Munich . In 1966 he received his habilitation and in 1968 he accepted an appointment at the Free University of Berlin . From 1970 until his retirement in 1987 he was full professor of Latin philology at the University of Basel. In 1979/80 he was Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and History.

Delz dealt extensively with textual criticism and edition. Thanks to his work, the first critical edition of the Punica by the imperial poet Silius Italicus (1987) is to be thanked. From 1994 to 2002 Delz was President of the International Commission of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae , for which he had worked since his student days.

In memory of Josef Delz, the Josef Delz Prize of the University of Basel was set up after his death , which has been awarded annually since then to recognize outstanding student achievements in Latin. His estate is in the Basel University Library .
