Rudolf Laur-Belart

Rudolf Laur-Belart (born July 7, 1898 in Brugg ; † May 11, 1972 in Basel ) was a Swiss archaeologist and professor at the University of Basel . He led excavations in Vindonissa and Augusta Raurica .

Life

Rudolf Laur-Belart was the son of the agricultural politician Ernst Laur (1871–1964). He studied in Zurich and Heidelberg history, German and geography and in 1923 at Karl Hampe (1869-1936) in Heidelberg with the work studies the opening story of the Gotthard Pass (1924) PhD . He then worked as a district teacher and carried out archaeological research, including in Vindonissa.

From 1931 to 1941 he was an assistant at the Basel Historical Museum . In 1932 he completed his habilitation as the first lecturer in the subject of Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Basel with the work Vindonissa, Legionslager und Vicus (1935), which was widely used at the time . In 1941 he was appointed associate professor. From 1942 to 1960 he headed the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Basel, which he co-founded. As an excavator, he made important discoveries such as the central thermal baths of Vindonissa and the early Roman watchtowers on Lake Walen .

He led excavations on the Wittnauer Horn , the Sissacher Fluh and those of the Ticino grave fields. He was one of the founding members of the international Limes Congress . As editor and author of the Ur-Schweiz magazine (1937–1969), he endeavored to present the specialist knowledge in a generally understandable manner. His main interest was provincial Roman archeology . He was excavation director and president of the Pro Vindonissa Society based in the Vindonissa Museum from 1936 to 1966 and from 1935 to 1970 curator of the Pro Augusta Raurica Foundation.
