Hermann Bächtold

Hermann Bächtold (born February 3, 1882 in Ramsen , † June 4, 1934 in Basel ) was a Swiss historian .

Life

The son of a police officer became a teacher first, then studied from 1904 to 1909 story in Neuchatel , Basel , Berlin and Freiburg , where he in 1909 with a thesis on the north German trading history in the Middle Ages doctorate was. From 1911 to 1912 he worked as a teacher in Basel. In 1912 he completed his habilitation in Basel, where he worked for two years at the Swiss Economic Archives . In 1915 Bächtold became associate professor at the University of Basel; from 1920 until his death he was a full professor, initially for medieval and modern history, from 1931 for general history.

In 1919 Bächtold co-founded the Evangelical People's Party , for which he wrote social policy guidelines, and was editor of the Evangelical People's Newspaper from 1920 to 1922 . In 1920 he was also one of the founders of the cooperative for the publication of the Swiss Monthly Issues for Politics and Culture . In his academic work he dealt primarily with economic history, with Jacob Burckhardt , but also with questions of contemporary history, and tried to create a universal religious history. Bächtold had been an extraordinary member of the historical commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1923 and a full member since 1927 .
